MEDICAL TREATMENTS

The Vein & Aesthetic Center of Boston offers a full range of office-based treatments for venous disease. We use state-of the-art therapies to treat varicose veins of all sizes.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Compression Stockings

Graduated compression stockings give support to the legs and help improve blood return to the heart. They may slow the progression of vein disease and give symptomatic relief to your legs. They do not prevent or cure varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into unwanted, diseased veins using a very small needle. The solution, or sclerosant, produces an irritation that slowly closes off the vein which then gradually disappears. The needle used to perform sclerotherapy is about the size of a hair and causes minimal discomfort; most people find this relatively painless.

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is used to treat more significant vein problems. In most cases, the source of varicose veins and spider veins is a larger vein hidden under the surface of the skin diagnosed using painless, noninvasive ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy identifies and targets the affected veins. Under direct ultrasound visualization, a sclerosant is injected into the vein that scars and closes off the vein.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a minimally invasive approach to the treatment of larger varicose veins on the surface of the leg, best used with a visible bulging vein, which involves removing the bulging veins through small punctures under a local anesthetic. The permanent removal of the veins assures no recurrence and excellent long-term results, including optimal cosmetic appearance with minimal scarring.

EVLT DiagramEndovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

EVLT is a new approach to treating the superficial leg veins that can most often become varicosed, the great and small saphenous veins. EVLT is a minimally invasive alternative to hospital-based vein stripping and can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, without the risks associated with general anesthesia and groin dissection. Recuperation is much faster; the patient leaves the office immediately following the procedure and returns to normal activities the next day, without the need for bed rest.

In some instances, EVLT is combined with other treatments - such as sclerotherapy, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy - to fully address the individual's venous disease.
